NASA Psyche

Disciplines

Print / Illustration

Named after an asteroid orbiting the sun between Mars and Jupiter, Psyche is a NASA space mission led by Arizona State University. Psyche is of particular interest for this mission because of its unique composition – it is presumed to be fully metal. While other asteroids are made up of rock or ice, Psyche’s metallic properties suggest that it may consist of metal from the core of a planetesimal, a building block of the Sun’s planetary system. The mission marks the first time scientists will explore a composition of this kind.

The Psyche mission incorporates a range of technologies, from solarpowered spacecraft to advanced laser communication, contributing to its already complex, primarily digital environment.

Thus, the goal was to create a truly offline platform for people of all ages to take a break from their devices–to instead interact with Psyche and each other. This project is a play on the timeless and traditional 52-card deck. Inspired by the mission’s objectives, each suit is designed to be visually striking and distinct.

Space Suits

Psyches - The mission “badge” was designed in 2016 by designer Michael Taylor to represent the journey to a metal-rich world. The logo represents a planetesimal that has been separated internally into an iron core and a rocky mantle, and has experienced violent impacts which stripped away its mantle.

Satellites - Once launched into outer space, the Psyche spacecraft will communicate critical data about the asteroid back to Earth using advanced communication technology.

Asteroids - Psyche presents an unparalleled opportunity for scientists to study an asteroid rich in metal and gain valuable insights into the formation and evolution of our solar system.

Stars - The stars represent the limitless potential for exploration and discovery, which is central to the Psyche mission’s guiding principles. Being the first mission to an asteroid of its kind, the mission to Psyche represents a significant milestone for the space exploration community.

Face Cards

Modeled after the traditional 52-card deck, these Psyche-branded cards communicate important aspects of the mission while appealing to visual aesthetic. Each card is thoughtfully designed with small scale in mind, ensuring that they provide an instant read.

The face cards were given particular attention, with each face representing an iconic space suit model used throughout the years of space exploration advancement. The joker cards are designed after Psyche, the Greek goddess of the soul, whom the asteroid Psyche is named after.
